Day 18 & 19 and Unveiling of SL UT DGS LOGO

We have earned all of the souviners to date. Yes even 18 & 19. Sorry for the delay on 18, we decided to go to Wendover Nevada on the 18th, explaining the delay…so bonus day you get two posts in one, plus the unveiling of the SL UT DGS Logo. The logo is my favorite part so it will be at the end of the post, saving the best for last.
Day 18…Oh what an amazing day! We started out in Farmington Utah trying to go to Lagoon (amusement park) but the line of cars to get in scared us off, so naturally we hopped the fun bus and hit Wendover, Nevada.
Our day 18 hide was published before we left, DAY 18 CSI#13 Two Heads are Better than One and Pip-Boy3000 was the first CSI on location congrats FTF.  This one was a blast to hide, except for digging the hole for the sprinkler box and heads to fit in…digging holes is hard work. We resurrected the L & L Killer from our CSI series for this one. Since the case was never closed it sparked the CSI’s to move in on the clues and try and catch that L& L Killer! This one was tricky for some, we hid the log book inside one of the heads so once you find the cache you have to find the log book.

The swag included black roses with a note from the L & L killer, eyeballs and flies. Above is Geominer having fun with the cache.
     For our find on the 18th Balkamper13 convinced me to leave the casino and walk to the “Liquor Store” with him. The Liquor store was half way to the cache he wanted to get and after a drink or three, we were off. Balkamper13 said it was 300 feet from store when it was really a mile or two, I stopped keeping track. We found victory highway and more by one of our favorite cachers, Dumbledore's Army 2006. Luckily for us the last cacher to find this was thomfre from Karmøy, Norway. He left a geocaching trading card and cool personalized bottle cap. We were thrilled it was worth a walk in the desert away from the cool casino for this one!

We made it back after almost missing the fun bus and this leads us to 19. This was a funny one, once our caching friends saw our post about being in Wendover they were worried we would hide day 19 there. Read the cache page for Day 19 CAN you say WENDOVER? We thought we would make them panic a bit. Tntsnow canned this one first and then there was a rush of cachers kind of like a mini event at GZ. The logs are great reading about the meetings. Also wanted to say thanks for the cute swag Tntsnow has been leaving,
This was not our best cache but the logs on this one are some of my favorites! It was a mini trash can we placed in West Jordan, way closer than Wendover Nevada! Jenna889 with the cache.
Our find for the day was a really fun one. It was called An Undercover Cache by xjamminx. It was a 3 difficulty and took us a bit of time to locate we walked by it several times! I loved it. Favorite point for sure! I am not posting the front...if your curious go find it...it's a fun one!

OK….drum roll…the moment we have all been waiting for. We are getting so official, we have a logo for the SL UT DGS chapter thanks to the talented and super patient STRIZA.  ……………and the logo is…




Oh yes! We are already slapping this logo on anything and everything we can. You will be seeing a lot more of it. Thanks again Striza your amazing!

CSI Episode #10 CROSSwalk

CSI Episode #10 CROSSwalk GC40W3K

 Here is our tenth installment of the CSI series. This is one of my personal favorites. GC40W3K CROSSwalk was a fun one to put together. The idea came to us one afternoon while driving on a back road home. We noticed a few crosses off the side of the road that had been placed in remembrance of tragic happenings.I looked at Darcey and said that
would make great camouflage for a geocache. We went to a local Home Depot the next day and got some materials to build CROSSwalk. We used a 2x10 to build the box and a 2x12 for the lid. This worked out great to fit the ammo can inside. I used 2x4's to build the cross part of the hide. We also fastened the cross to the lid with some L brackets for extra stability and used a nice heavy duty hinge for the lid. We then went out along the back road and found a nice little spot about 40 feet off the road on to of a small hill. We then dug a hole large enough to bury the wooden box with the ammo can inside, just leaving the lid and cross portion visible when you get close. The hole was fun to dig (LOL) I swear we picked the rockiest area in Utah. I should have brought a pick but was not expecting the ground to be that bad. To retrieve the ammo can and log you just tip the cross over.

For added effect we drilled some holes in the lid and glued some plastic flowers into them. We also added a wreath for that extra special touch.

Inside the can we placed the foot part of the victim. Darcey even added a sock to the foot for effect. The sock worked out great because we were able to tuck the log book into the band. We had such a great time putting this one together and adding little details for effect.

CSI EPISODE #7 LIVER AND ONIONS

 This instalment in our CSI series was a lot of fun to build and hide. We had the liver body part and had a few ideas on how to use it but this seemed to be the best idea we had. We found a large cake storage container and painted it silver to look  like a fancy silver platter. We then found plastic lemon slices and painted them white to look like sliced onions topped off with fake flys and cockroaches.

So as if this were not the start to a great geocache Darcey stepped it up a notch and had the local Golden Corral restaurants place it behind the counter. To log this geocache you must walk in and order liver and onions. This also worked out great because we had our geocache reviewer wait until the day of our event to publish this hide. The cache was hidden at the same  Golden Corral our event was at. It was a riot watching all the phones go off with a notification of a new cache only 100 feet away. Another great thing that happened with this hide is that the waitress brought the cache in on a serving tray and served the cache to all of our attendees. I know that this was the first time a geocache has ever been served to a group of people. Its not everyday that the cache finds you.

 The locals loved the fact that we went to such efforts for this hide and for our first event to be so great. They loved the fact that they got two smiley faces on their account just for showing up. This also was a great thing for our series because a few of them got their first look at a cache from this series and it made them want to go find the rest of the hides. I will admit it was not easy to pull off this hide. We had a few issues with the reviewer and groudspeaks guidelines. We actually had to pull quite a few strings to get this one to make it in the lineup. I must offer a special thanks to BLUERAJAH our Utah reviewer for letting a few things slide and publishing this for us. There are guidelines that state you are not supposed to have to speak with anyone to retrieve a geocache. There are also commercial business stipulations that certain info may not be used and may not help promote a business. But with a little discussion and evaluation we were able to get this one published. To get your smily you have to sign the log book inside of the liver. Anyone hungry? A must find for all cachers!

So here is one of our favorite caches so far. Episode #5 was built around the hand. We cut the hand at the wrist and inserted a pill bottle for the log book. It needed some finishing touches so we put a watch on the pill bottle over red duct tape. It is pretty handy. We then hoisted this cache up a tree on a pulley system. A tree camo bag was specially made for this cache. The hand and CSI swag is inside of a big Ziploc bag to make sure it is a bit more weather proof. The bag is attached to the rope and the cacher must use hand over hand motions to retrieve this CSI scene. Our first attempt at this pulley system failed and the cachers that found it wrote the best logs, speculating the L& L killer came back to the scene and made it difficult for agents to find. We went back to this dump site and upgraded the rope and pulley system. This cache is hidden by a hospital and parking is near the breast care center, so our logs are are pretty funny! Breast yet! You will defiantly want to check this cache out!

CSI Episode #6 The Hitchikers Guide to CSI

The Longitude and Latitude killer has left another clue.

 

This cache is located at a truck stop where our victim got his last lift. We believe our victim may not be able to hitchhike ever again. This scene contains a thumb with a spanner tube inside of it with the log. It is inside a spray painted large pill bottle. We had a great time scouting the location for this hide and felt the location was as important as the cache contents. It is a fun park and grab. We are hoping other CSI agents/cachers from all areas will find this one. This cache also has had some fun logs. We love this series and the faithful agents that follow this series. The final will be the best!

 EPISODE #4 The EARrie sounds of angels

On episode #4 of our Crime Scene Investigator series we hid an ear. When we were figuring out how to hide this case file we originally thought of hanging a small bison tube from the ear like an earring. However after further deliberation and the fact we are not huge micro fans, Ted added it to the inside of a fence post. He used the cap to hold all the pieces of the geocache. Ted first glued a ring inside the cap and then attached the ear and a pill bottle using some steel fishing line. If you look close you can see that it almost looks like the pill bottle is an ear ring. The title came from the location we picked which just happens to be the entrance to a church. Hence the EARrie sounds of angels was created. It does give you an EARrie feeling when you lift the fence post to find another piece of our Cache Scene Victim.

Inside the geocache we placed a log book, some signature CSI (cache scene investigators swag), and a few prizes for the first agents whom solve this crime scene. The first to find prize was a super rare 1,000,000 bill. Sorry Second to Find, all you get is a gold dollar. The rest of the CSI agents will get Signature SWAG and whatever CSI's trade. We are trying to get every type of cache in this series. So this one covers the traditional fence pole cache.

GC3W5DF EPISODE 3: Face "LIFT"

I guess you "NOSE" another crime has been committed in the caching world...hence Episode 3. It is hidden behind a Gold's Gym under the original StairMaster...a staircase. It is attached with super Strong magnetics and fun of full Cache Scene Investigator SWAG. The race was on for the First to Find on this and the logs are worth reading. We have had a lot of fun with all of the crime scenes. We were asked where we found all of the body parts...or if we are really serial killers! WE LOVED IT! 

FACE LIFT in actual hiding location. In corner of staircase on back of Gold's Gym. The magnetic in the lid is STRONG.

This series has been a real hit in the area. Who would have thought from hiding fake dead body parts we have been able to bring life back to old cachers. Not only did we do a face lift we have been able to do a spirt lift also.  We have been receiving emails as to give hints on our next hide or asking when another one will be coming out. One person even said they were about to give up on geocaching because of the everyday normal micro in a boring area. Its been great to see people so happy to find caches again and be so excited to find our hides. Its amazing how much a little effort and a few things from the dollar store can change the way people feel.  Here are a few quotes from cachers who have found following this series so far.

"I ran out of the house (still awake since I worked the late shift) in my pj's. I was glad I was all alone - or fellow cachers may have mistaken me for the 4th crime scene - LOL!!!!!!!!!

Episode #2 This was the first puzzle I ever did, and WOW. I had lots of help from Momthecook/Nancy, she is the puzzle queen. Nancy was a life saver and I was able to figure out how to place a coordinate checker on bottom of listing...big time for me. This case file is a fake brain placed with magnets under the CPU of a trash compacter...get it...a mind is a terrible thing to waste? The locations of theses series are just as critical to solving the crime as the containers or body parts are.  They relate.  We keep getting asked when the next crime will be committed. The logs on our other caches are getting questions about the CSI series and when the next episode will be published. This has been the funnest series ever!

We have decided to start our blog up. I had tried this before and it didn't work, so I had my wonderful Mother help me get started again and we are looking forward to sharing our caching adventures with everyone. We are addicted to caching and do not want and intervention...we love it and hope you will find joy in our passion for caching. 

So the above photo is a pic of our first hide in our CSI cache series. At the end of the series we will hide a final and the first cacher to find all of these crime scenes will get a special award. All of the hides are listed as dump sites and the clues are similar to CSI dialog. Look it up...GC3VK4P So far 3 cachers have solved this crime scene and the cache has 3 favorite points. This has made us so happy.
